Politics and War in Colonial Cuba: The Origins of the Ten Years’ War

Anotace

The war of 1868 between Spain and Cuba marked the first armed conflict between the Pearl of the Antilles and the Spanish metropolitan government. This war overlapped with the September Revolution of 1868 in the Iberian Peninsula, which led to the fall of Isabella II and the rise of a new progressive liberal government. This conference examines the initial attempts of the new government to resolve the war in the colony through political action – a project that ultimately failed spectacularly, primarily due to the reactionary resistance of the most radical Spanish loyalists: the Integrists, who had their own paramilitary militia, the Corps of Volunteers.
