Dr. Norris: Obsessed With Work or Obsessed With History?

A public lecture of Dr Dawn Norris who is a Fulbright visiting professor at the Department of Sociology at CU FA on Preliminary Findings on the Czech Meaning of Work and Unemployment. The lecture will be held on 22 June 2023 at 4 pm in Celetná 13, room 1.09.

Abstract

There is a relatively limited amount of cross-national research that examines work and unemployment using a social psychological approach. I address this gap in the literature by presenting preliminary findings on this topic from my recent research in the Czech Republic. I also compare and contrast these findings to the results of my US research on unemployment. The current study’s preliminary results fall into three themes: 1) Czechs and people from the United States think differently about work and unemployment; 2) national history and current structure strongly influence how Czechs think about these topics; and 3) generational/age differences exist in how Czechs think about these topics.
