Café Collaborations: „Telling the holocaust history without witnesses“

As the last of World War II witnesses are dying of old age, the sense of the depth and extent of the suffering in once war-stricken Europe is fading away and the question opens how to preserve their legacy. In her talk, Kateřina Králová will elaborate on trends in heretigization of the Holocaust in Europe and beyond.
Discussing both the musealization of the Holocaust and the Holocaust education, she will exemplify how the Holocaust has been universalized as the ultimate instance of violence against humanity but also as a lesson to learn about solidarity and empathy. Intriguingly, Králová asks how the public reflection and reception of the Holocaust developed from 1952’s Anne Frank diary publication to recent hologram technology preserving stories of Holocaust survivors.

Kateřina Králová is an Associate Professor, Deputy Director of The Herzl Center for Israel Studies (HCIS), and project leader of “Beyond Hegemonic Narratives and Myths” (2017–2021) at the Charles University in Prague.
