Traineeships (2–12 months)

Within the Erasmus+ programme you can also go on a practical internship, even if it is not in the curriculum of your subject-area. You can do an internship at any institution within the European Union, with the exception of institutions directly funded through EU resources (e.g. the European Parliament).

  • A practical internship is defined as assistance/work for a foreign university or other institution (company, organisation, self-employed person, etc.), which should have some connection with the field studied at the Charles University Faculty of Arts. An internship does not include research (e.g. work on a final thesis) or study in any form.
  • Practical internships are open to all properly enrolled students of the Faculty of Arts.
  • When on a practical internship you should work at least 20-40 hours per week.
  • Students can go abroad for a practical internship for a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 12 months. This period of time must not be exceeded when on Erasmus.
  • All students are entitled to spend 360 days on Erasmus per study cycle (Bc., Mgr., Phd. ). They are entitled to a further 360 days on each subsequent study cycle.
  • Stays abroad can be combined in various ways (e.g. five-month study stay abroad and then a practical internship for the remainder of the period, etc.).
  • Students who fail to fulfil all the obligations specified in the Participation Agreement for their previous trip are not permitted to apply for the subsequent selection procedure.
  • Due to budgetary restrictions, nominations for practical internships are suspended from October 2024 until further notice.

Selection procedure

If you intend to go on a practical internship, you must consult your department coordinator, who will then nominate you for your chosen institution. In general, you seek out an institution yourself if the department does not have contracts in place for a practical internship (most departments have long-term contracts for study stays only). First, contact your chosen institution to establish whether you will be accepted for a practical internship.

General requirements for selection for a practical internship:

  • link between the content of the practical internship and the student’s field of study at the Charles University Faculty of Arts
  • knowledge of the language at minimum B2 level

Once you have been nominated by the departmental coordinator, please create an application for a practical internship in the app (if a contract with the institution exists).

Pre-departure

If you choose an institution with which the Faculty of Arts does not have a bilateral contract for Erasmus+ practical internships, it is possible to negotiate a new contract. If a contract already exists, you start by completing the Traineeship Agreement (application) in the web app.

Traineeship Agreement

This document serves as your application for Erasmus with us at CU.

Enter all necessary data and the internship plan in the application form. Consult your tutor at the institution abroad about your internship plan.

Once you have filled in the whole of the application, download it and send the Charles University part to your coordinator at the department for completion and signature, then send the part with the name of the institution abroad to your tutor or the head of the institution abroad for completion and signature.

When both parts have been returned signed, send the entire application to erasmusout@ff.cuni.cz.

Euro bank account

In order to receive a scholarship, you need to open a Euro account. This account can be opened with any bank with a branch in the Czech Republic. Once you have opened your account, write down the account number and all the necessary information in the Finance section in the application in the app.

Submit your Traineeship Agreement, signed by the Vice-Dean for Studies, to the bank as a confirmation of your Erasmus+ trip.

Dean’s decision on the awarding of a scholarship

Request an acceptance letter, based on which the dean’s decision on the awarding of a scholarship is issued, from the institution abroad.

Participation Agreement

After the dean’s decision has been issued, a Participation Agreement is prepared at the European Office of the Rectorate. This is also the final document that needs to be obtained before the trip. As soon as the agreement is ready, you will receive an invitation email from the European Office. To sign the agreement, you will need a Traineeship Agreement, a letter of acceptance and the Dean’s decision on the awarding of a scholarship.

If you are unable to appear in person to sign the Participant Agreement, you can send someone with a power of attorney to sign it on your behalf – download here (notarisation not required).

The scholarship, covering the entire period of the practical internship, will be transferred to your Euro account in a single payment within two weeks of signature of the Participation Agreement.

You must organise insurance for your study stay yourself.

This form is used to confirm the length of the stay abroad and must be confirmed by the coordinator at the end of your stay at the institution abroad. Please deliver it to the CU European Office within 10 days of your return. It is possible to use both our form and that of the university abroad. This document must be submitted in the original or as a scan and sent by the coordinator abroad to erasmus.outgoing@ruk.cuni.cz with a copy to erasmusout@ff.cuni.cz.

Final Report / Traineeship Certificate

The final document to be sent to the International Office of the Faculty of Arts is the final assessment from your Erasmus+ internship. This will be issued to you by your tutor at the institution abroad before your departure.
