Candidates shall indicate the doctoral programme and subject of studies for which they are applying in the application (the application form may be obtained at the Study Department of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, and is also available on www.ff.cuni.cz.
The completed form shall be accompanied by the following documents, which are an integral part of the application:
– a notarised copy of the highest degree awarded (Master“s, Licentiate, Diploma etc.) or confirmation of the nostrification of completed studies on master-level,
– the candidate“s curriculum vitae,
– two letters of recommendation from specialists in the field,
– a project for the proposed doctoral thesis (2-3 pages).
Candidates should bring a list of their publications and research papers/degree work in the field to the admission examination/interview.
Candidates can discuss admission requirements and the topic of their doctoral research projects beforehand with the contact person for their chosen field. It should be noted that candidates cannot be admitted to a doctoral programme if an appropriate supervisor cannot be found for the chosen topic.
The application must be accompanied by the original receipt confirming payment of the administrative fee, or else the fee may be paid on the spot at the cash desk of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University. The fee is not refundable at any phase of admission procedures.General Information on Doctoral Admission Procedures:
The Faculty of Arts offers three-year doctoral study programmes in regular full-time/internal or in combined/distance form. The programme of studies is structured according to individual study plans. Doctoral studies are completed with a state doctoral examination and a defence of the doctoral dissertation.
The admission examination takes the form of an oral interview focused on the candidate“s specialist knowledge and suitability for independent research in the chosen field. The interview includes an expert debate on the candidate“s written proposal for a doctoral thesis. The interview is held in the language in which the candidate will be studying.
Admission depends on both admission examination and the availability of an appropriate supervisor. At the end of the examination period the admissions committee draws up an order of candidates proposed for admission on the basis of both evaluation of the difficulty and subject potential of the doctoral projects submitted and the results of the interviews.
Students who for serious and documented reasons cannot attend the examination on the prescribed date and who make written request to the dean by the time of that date may be allowed to attend admission examinations on the reserve date.

7105 History Egyptology (in English)The candidate will inform the examinations committee of his or her previous studies, specialist work and any publications or other activities in the field. He or she will also submit a written project for doctoral research, which will be the subject of debate at the interview. Knowledge of the Egyptian language is presupposed. The candidate should meet the following additional requirements for language skills – English language (active), German and French (passive).

The doctoral programme in Egyptology is designed for graduates of master“s programmes primarily in historical subjects at universities abroad. It offers an opportunity for students to deepen their knowledge of the history, archaeology and language of Ancient Egypt in relation to their doctoral research topic, particularly within the chronological span of the Old Kingdom – Late Period.
