The lecture will take place at the main building of CU FA, room P018, on 25 September 2024 at 6 pm.
Matija Murko was one of the founders of South Slavic literary studies, Slavic ethnography, and folklore studies. He was also the founder of the Slavic Institute (Slovanský ústav). Among other things, he is also known for his intensive contacts with scholars in the Russian Empire, who, after World War I and the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, found themselves in independent Ukraine, in exile, or in Bolshevik Russia. In the early 1920s, Murko attempted to reestablish contacts with colleagues who were active in the Soviet Union. The paper examines the political, academic, and personal aspects of his academic connections with scholars from the former Russian Empire. In fact, the presentation is dedicated to academic relations between scholars and scholarly institutions at the time of international crises and wars.
