Comments on the Double Life of One Finnish Linguist: The Double Life of Unending Escape and Shame

As part of the Pride Month lecture series, the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, invites you to a lecture and discussion with Dr Jan Dlask and Associate Professor Yrjö Lauranto from Finnish Studies at the Department of Germanic Studies at CU FA. It will take place on Thursday, 8 June 2023, at 6:00 pm in room P200 in the main building of CU FA (nám. Jana Palacha 1/2, Prague 1). The lecture and discussion will be held partly in English and partly in Czech.

Linguist Olli Nuutinen (1939–1995) became famous in the post-war period as a pioneer in teaching Finnish to foreigners; he worked for many years as a Finnish language lecturer, among other places, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Teachers of Finnish at Charles University used his textbooks for a long time as well. In 1995, Nuutinen published his autobiography Kommenteja kahteen elämään (Comments on the Double Life), in which the reader may learn how an academic was forced to hide his homosexuality for almost his entire life.
