On 25 and 26 September, the international conference 21st Century: Modernity Today? will be held by the Centre for Portugal Studies at the Department of Romance Studies, in cooperation with the Prague branch of the Camões Institute and the Society for Lusitan Studies in the Czech Republic.
Twenty-five participants include leading Portugalists such as Hélder Macedo (Kingʼs College London), Jacqueline Penjon (Université Sorbonne Nouvelle), Walnice Nogueira Galvão (University São Paulo) and Isabel Pires de Lima (University of Porto). Topics of discussion include forms of modernity in countries on the margins of the West, such as Portugal and Brazil, pitfalls of the modernization processes, and changes in the reception of artworks related to the outset of modernity.
The official language of the conference is Portuguese.
