Nemanja Radulović, University of Belgrade: Vuk Karadžić and the Emergence of Folkloristics in Europe

Vuk Karadžić‘s work is based around the concept of folk literature. It determined both Vuk‘s influence on Serbian culture and the reception of his work in Europe. Vuk can also be seen from the perspective of Serbian folklore and literary studies as well as from the broader perspective of European intellectual history. The lecture seeks to show how Vuk contributed to the formation of folklore and literary studies as a discipline in the early 19th century, and how his efforts figure in contemporary intercultural transfers in Europe.
