4th Israeli Week at Charles University Organised by the Prague Centre for Jewish Studies

On 24 – 27 October 2016, the Prague Centre for Jewish Studies organises the 4th Israeli Week at Charles University. The aim of the „Israeli Week“ is to map important topics in Israeli studies by means of lectures by Czech and international experts, and to connect the Czech academia with Israeli and other international institutions. Israeli studies is an interdisciplinary field for the study of modern Israeli history, politics, society, culture, and art. The programme also pays attention to the study of Jewish communities in diaspora after the establishment of Israel. The project serves as a platform for future development of research and teaching of Israeli studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University.

This year, the Israeli Week consists of three main sections. The first one focuses on socio-cultural and historical aspects of the Arab minority which forms more than 1/5 of all citizens in contemporary Israel (24 – 25 October). The second section is devoted to the reflection on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in society, literature, and culture (27 October). The third section (26 October) presents international and diplomatic relations of Israel, including papers on mutual relationships between Israel and the Czech Republic (Czechoslovakia), the European Union, and Morocco.
