Science and Research

The Faculty of Arts is a part of Charles University and as such is a research tertiary education institution. The very special place of the CUFA in the Central European region in the field of humanities has been earned both by its high proficiency and the diversity of the pursued fields of study, which are the responsibility of 45 specialised institutes and departments. The continuation of the tradition of the CUFA being the provider of outstanding knowledge depends, especially, on its academic staff and the doctoral students, whose further professional development is one of our priorities.

The CUFA in Prague currently employs 912 academic and research staff. More than 600 students are enrolled in Ph.D. programmes as full-time students and another 1,100 are enrolled for a combined form of Ph.D. studies. The scientific and research activities of the Faculty involve a wide scale of options: project grants (international ESF-funded projects, projects funded nationally by the Czech Science Foundation or by the Grant Agency of Charles University), broad publishing activity, conferences, lectures and the related development of international cooperation. The self-governing bodies of the Faculty, especially its Research Board composed of important representatives of the individual fields, participate in the definition of the Faculty’s long-term objectives.
