Since being given its independence at the beginning of the past century, the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague has been concentrating on its principal concerns - the humanities. As a result it is now one of the biggest and most important humanistic institutions in the Czech Republic.

Of the total of 912 full-time and part-time employees 600 are engaged in research and teaching - 57 professors, 122 assistant professors, 243 specialized assistants, 102 assistants, 73 lectors, 108 scientific workers.
The total number of students is 7,707, most of whom (2,310) studying for the degree of Master, 3781 studying for a Bachelor's degree and 1,616 for a doctor's degree.
Each year authors of the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts publish an average of 17 book titles in the Karolinum publishing house and some 20 titles under the auspices of the Faculty itself.
